Breast Reduction Surgery | Mammaplasty Surgery

Breast reduction surgery (also called as reduction mammaplasty) is plastic surgery to reduce the size of your large and heavy breasts (macromastia, or mammary hyperplasia) by removing excess fat, tissue and skin from the breasts and reshape them so that they are in better proportion with your body. It is also done if one breast is much larger than the other. The surgery will alleviate neck, back, and shoulder pain, skin irritation or shoulder soreness from tight bra straps which may be occur due to the weight of large or pendulous breasts (breasts with nipples and areolas that point downward). Breast reduction surgery aims to make the breasts smaller, more shapely and better supported.

Men with abnormally enlarged breasts (gynecomastia) may also go for breast reduction surgery. Additionally, it may also be needed as a re-constructive surgery following the surgical removal of cancerous breast tissue (mastectomy), to make the breasts more symmetric and better in appearance.

The process

The surgery takes approximately 2-4 hours to complete. Firstly the surgeon makes three incisions: the first one around the areola , the second one from the areola down to the crease under your breast, and the third one across the lower crease of your breast that produces the least conspicuous scar. After this, excess breast tissue, fat and skin are removed to reshape the breasts, and the nipple and areola are repositioned according to pre operational markings. In cases where the breasts are very large and droopy, the nipple and areola might be reattached at a higher position as a skin graft. Lastly, the surgeon closes the incisions with stitches and a firm bandage dressing is applied over the suture line. Sometimes, a tube is placed under each arm to drain any excess blood or fluid. Sometimes liposuction (fat suctioning) is combined with breast reduction to remove extra fat from the armpit area to improve the contour under the arm.

The outcome

You can see the results immediately. The swelling may be completely go down after few months and scarring usually fades over time. By successful breast reduction surgery the smaller and better shaped breasts can be achieved and the accompanying pain in your upper back, neck and shoulders may be disappeared. Your clothes will fit better and you will feel more confident about your appearance.
